In Memory

Larry R. Nelson, CPA, Bookkeeper
and Bibliophile (he might say “Biblioholic”)
June 17, 1943-March 6, 2015

In 2005, The Stray Dog Bookshop was envisioned by founder, Larry Nelson. Being a book “accumulator” since college, the dream of opening a bookstore was always present. After practicing as a certified public accountant in various capacities for thirty-five plus years, Larry moved into another phase of “bookkeeping,” founding the Stray Dog Bookshop. The Stray Dog shop is located in a refurbished home built in 1852 in downtown Three Rivers. Larry’s collection grew to over 25,000 hardcover and paperback books that were carefully selected and presented. The shop included comfy chairs and benches, stained glass, and complementary coffee in its later days. The bookshop became reality thanks to mentoring, guidance, encouragement, and assistance from many people, who meant a lot to Larry as he brought his dream to reality.

The Stray Dog, including its stray cat, “Joey,” remained an important part of his life until Larry died suddenly on March 6, 2015 after a short battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Kate Arney, who has worked at the bookshop from its beginning, will be joining Larry’s wife, Nicki, in overseeing the liquidation sales on line and in the store. This spring 2015 will include online sales, followed by in-store sales of the books and the fixtures. Watch this site for announcements.
